The Big Help Out

Rootz members getting stuck in to help out with our footpaths

Monday 8th May 2023

The Coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday 6th May, and the Government has designated the following Monday, 8th May, as an extra Bank Holiday. This day will be devoted to voluntary organisations, as described on the official web site:

"The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend."

Rootz are planning to do our bit by having a special Workday, during which we will be undertaking a number of pieces of work, such as clearance of overgrown vegetation and repair of footpath assets: stiles, gates, fingerposts, etc. We would like to encourage people to help out, and hope that a number of new people will get involved and join us.

We will meet at 9:45 am on Monday 8th May on the King George V Recreation Ground by the cricket scoreboard. Depending on numbers, we will then divide into teams and walk to the various places where work is to be carried out. Please wear stout waterproof boots or wellies, because some of the footpaths are likely still to be very muddy.

To get involved, you must be over 18, and you will need to fill out a couple of forms so that you are covered by East Sussex County Council's insurance. You can download these forms here or you can contact us by email or Messenger. You can also indicate whether you want to join as a temporary member for the day, or whether you are interested in joining Rootz on a more permanent basis. If you choose just to be a temporary member, we will delete all your personal details from our records after the special Workday has taken place.

Please return the forms to us by email no later than Thursday 4th May. If you have any problems with this, please contact us and we can give you a snail-mail address for you to pop in the letter-box.

If you are unable to take part in the workday, we will also be having a tour of the village footpaths that will take in some of the locations where our work-parties will be hard at it, together with a family quiz. This will start at the cricket scoreboard at 10:15 am and take about an hour. Following this, we will be having a picnic on the recreation ground from about 12 noon, so please bring your tables, chairs, rugs, food and drink and come and join us!
